Plasma Cases: The Significance Of Ata 300 Specifications
Plasma cases, which are used to ship plasma and LCD TVs, must first qualify for compliance to the Airline Transport Association’s ATA Spec 300 or ATA 300 specifications before authorities can permit them to be shipped by air. This standard is concerned with the design and durability of cases. Should a particular model of case fail to achieve ATA 300 certification, it cannot be allowed onboard an airplane, for safety and security reasons.
In a nutshell, for a shipping case to be able to gain this certification, it must be able to survive being shipped at least 100 times, and must still be usable after that.
Some of the particular tests run by the ATA to determine compliance to this certification include dropping test plasma cases many times on all of their corners and surfaces from heights of up to three feet, and from various angles, subjecting them to levels of vibration that approximate vibration experienced in the cargo hold of an airplane, checking to see whether edges are sharp or rounded, and examining the durability of certain parts and components. For example, the handles are checked to determine whether or not they are recessed, and if they will break when subjected to levels of stress similar to those experienced by cases in transit.
It may seem excessive to some, but this certification is meant to help those who use plasma cases by letting them know if their case – and, more importantly, the plasma screen or TV inside it – can survive the rigors of regular air-transport wear and tear.
