Hi. I waqs just wondering if I can put Formica on an old huge wood desk?
I just bought this wooden conference desk that is in it's original condition, which is excellent with just minor fading. However, I bought it to use it as a craft table for rubber stamping and scrapbooking workshops. The room is lavender with white trim and all my other furniture in the room is a bright white. I've been told I am crazy for wanting to refinish this piece but I did not buy it for an heirloom, I bought it to serve a purpose and I am a real matchy-matchy type of person....... Can someone help me out with this? I would like to know if I can cover the desk with Formica laminate? I know that this is what they use on countertops and this tends to hold up forever. Any help with this and/or a referral in the Cleveland, Ohio area would be great!!! Thanks so much for your time. Nicole : )
Yes, you can adhere Formica (laminate) to the top of the desk. You can order a piece after looking through the samples of laminate at your local home center store. You are shopping for the flexible sheet of laminate and not the pre-formed counter top. When you order, bring along the dimensions so that you order a piece large enough to cover the top with a bit extra all around. The desk top must be smooth and flat and sanded and ready for the laminate installation.
The Formica is adhered with a contact type cement and you can easily find the installation instructions online. You will need to trim the laminate with a router with a laminate bit to clean the edges. If you pay attention to proper preparation and have the right tools on hand (you can rent them) you can complete this project yourself.

Help - how to weld metal bars into shelves?
next few weeks at work i'm planning on turning a bunch of steel and aluminum bars (from the scrap heap) into different sized metal shelves using a TIG welder. i haven't used the welder in awhile but i planned to be supervised by an expert. So my question is really asking for tips/pointers into putting a metal shelf together.
I understand that steel and aluminum will not combine.
The shelves will be used to hold computers and monitors and other necessary equipment for a combustion experiment.
Is there a systematic process (for a shelf specifically) into assembling the bars? How will i be able to clamp it down if the bars are going to be different widths and at right angles? Once the frame is built, there may be an option to weld metal boards, how can that be done? When will a tack weld be more useful than a line weld?
This is the first time that I will be making metal shelves, so any extra tips beyond the questions posted will benefit me greatly.
I hate to bring problems up for you, but you can't weld aluminum to steel or vice versa. The two metals will not mix.
Also to weld aluminum your tig welder must have high freqincy on it also. Mosy welders don't.
If you are going to use sheet steel for the shelves and want to use the aluminum bars as the post, there is a way you can do so, however it will require buying some steel pipe with the inside diameter a hair larger than the aluminum bars.
drill a series of small holes 1" apart down one side of the pipe and then cut into small nipples between the holes. leave about 3/4" on one side of the hole and 1/4" on the other. Tig the pipe to the plate metal with the 3/4" toward the plate where you want the post to go on top and bottom of the bottom shelves,( if you want some short legs on the bottom of the rack) on bottom of the top shelves and on top and bottom of all the shelves in between.
Cut the bars to fit and then use self tapping screws to attach them as you put them together.
All it will only take is a small tack weld on both sides of the pipe. Maybe a 10% to 15% weld. There isn't any sense using up a lot of argone gas, welding rods and time welding them 100%.
It is also a question of how heavy the sheet steel is, how far between the uprights, and what will be put on them as to whether you will need bracing such as angle iron under the front and rear lip of the shelves. The heaver the load, the bigger the angle needs to be but 3/4" x 3/4" should be enough even if you have something as thin as 20 gauge sheet for the shelves.
If you are useing something like 1/4" plate for the shelves, you shouldn't even nee the angle at all unless you want the post spread a part a long ways.

I did find out from someone that read your question that you don't have to have Hi Fre. if you use helium gas instead if argon gas. First time I ever heard of it after 35 years of welding but the guy seemed like he was correct. Learn some new trying to answer someone elses question. Oh well. lol

Re-doing room?
Currently my walls are a bright orange, I have a green chair, purple curtains, and the whole room freaks me out. Nothing matches at all, and the whole thing seems a bit babyish. I also have a bunch of pictures of animals all over my walls. I'll get rid of those. I have a bookcase that I really like, but right now it's like a natural maple color. So I'll sand it and paint it white. Also, my trim is stained dark brown. I don't have any focus point of the room, and I'm open to dying my slip cover chair (from dry ice). What color theme do you think I should use? I like it to look a bit asian like, but what would you suggest for the walls, bed and curtains? I have a desk, a coat rack, a shelf, bookcase, full size bed, nightstand, keyboard, nightstand, tv and computer to work into the design. What would you suggest? Please no pastels - I like it to be sophisticated and not too modern.

Help in finding a case to defend my position?
For my criminal justice class, I have a pretend case I have to defend. The situation is when a wife calls the police after years of abuse, the wife consents to the police entering her home and proceeds to file a spousal abuse report. Then the wife says her husband has illegal drugs in their bedroom drawer. The police enters the bedroom and gets the wife to open the drawer and there they do find the drugs. Then the husband returns and was told by the police to wait by the door. My position that I need to defend is: why is it not a violation of fourth amendment for the police to have a warrantless search and seizure since it's taken place inside a home?
Because the resident gave consent to the search and also pointed the evidence out to police. There is one little kicker in here though and that is that technically a wife can't testify against her husband and vice versa. Additionally, the woman gave police probable cause to search when she filed charges of spousal abuse. Police don't need a warrant when they've been invited into the home.
American Citizens need to understand the laws of the land and unfortunately our schools don't teach our children enough about them. Never ever invite police into your home or let them in when they ask. Once they are in, they don't need a warrant. If you have called them, then they are there on probable cause and again don't need a warrant to prevent a crime if invited in.
If police question you ever, never answer their questions without an attorney present. You are giving up rights and unless you are well-versed in the law, you could jeopardize your freedom.
