what is bad a about ata school?

i take tkd at the ata american tkd association and i think they are pretty good cuz they kinda do everything from ground fighting to forms to boxing combos to self defense and kicking so why does every one say they are bad

I don't bring up the ATA unless someone ask about it. Here is a small amount about the ATA. I could list much more......

After over 42 years of training in various arts, I have to say that ATA schools are some of the worst in the martial arts. It does not matter that they are polite and such. The teach crap and promote way to often for any type of legitimate training. Do some research on the web. You will find many blogs by people that are former ATA members they will tell you the crap that goes on within the ATA. IF you have a problem with a school and go to the ATA, they will just send you back to the school. One blog told of a family that joined. They were supposed to get uniforms free with their contacts. One member got a uniform that fit. The second got one that was several sizes to large. The daughter did not get one. The school told the family one would be ordered and would be there in a few weeks. Several months later they still had not uniform. The father became angry and went to ask about the uniform. He was told that uniforms were not included in the contract and that he would have to buy one.
The father also told of many mandatory seminars that were required before testing. These one hour seminars were $60 each and were pretty lame. Everything at ATA is over priced. The whole set up is designed to part as much money from you as they possibly can. ATA does not have anything to do with other TKD organizations or events.. They have their own tournaments. They do not compete in other TKD tournaments. The also do not allow non ATA people from competing in their tournaments. Every thing that they do is designed to keep non ATA people out and keep their students ignorant and away from other TKD styles.
Let me say that I rarely ever speak out against an organization or style. I find it distasteful to do so. However I'm sick of the total crap ATA gets away with. They sell black belts contracts. Their black belts are usually inferior to other TKD styles. The so called self-defense they teach is a joke. It pains me to say these things but they are true. The ATA is just a big money making machine. If you want to learn real TKD go somewhere else.

By the way..... I have nothing against TKD. I have known many very good TKD students and instructors. What I have a problem with is any school, or organization that is more interested in making money than in teaching real martial arts. ATA is a perfect example of a Shake-And-Bake martial arts organization. I have no respect for the organization or the methods it uses to keep its students as broke as possible while brain washing them into believing that they are being taught realistic martial arts. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Check out this link of common practices of McDojo. It spells out many of the tactics Shake-And-Bake martial arts schools use to dupe the public. I think you will see a lot of the same things done at ATA schools. I'm not saying that ATA is the only place that does these things, but they are some of the worst offenders.

nwohioguy made some good points. When I moved to Cumming, Georgia I went around to see what martial arts are available here. The area is full on ATA junk martial arts. I have trained full time most of the last 42 years. I have been teaching more than 35 years. I must say that the ATA is the worst organization I have seen anywhere. It is a embarrassment to even watch the junk taught in the local ATA schools. nwohioguys comment about the balck belts not even up to green belt abilities with other schools fits with my assessment of what is taught locally. I have witnessed at least 10-15 of the local ATA black belts that would not be considered good enough for green belts anywhere that teaches legitimate martial arts. My policy has always been to not bash other styles or organizations. But when someone ask in a public forum like this what is wrong with the ATA, I feel it only proper to come forward. It makes me sad to see how many people are taken in by the hype ATA puts out.

I have a friend that is a truck driver. He knows a guy that worked for the ATA. The guy was a highly skilled Tae Kwon Do student. ATA hired him to set up schools for them. He moves to an area. Then he leases a building, supervises the build out, and opens the school. As soon as the business gets up to a point where it pays the bills, he is moved on to a new location to start another school. ATA sells the school to someone that wants to own their own business. Many times the new owner is not highly skilled. Regardless, the students are stuck in a contract with the new owners. To become a ATA instructor requires that you sign a stack of contracts with the ATA. Everything is controlled by the ATA. Nothing that is not ATA approved is allowed in an ATA school. Instructors must meet quotas set by the ATA. That means that they must enroll students, and promote a minimum number of students to keep the ATA happy. They are pushed to promote often and to be promoted themselves. To be promoted they must meet the business quotas. The whole ATA system is a scam and a shame.

What are some cheap yet great sounding speakers I can get for DJing?

I am a mobile DJ on a budget and would like to know what are some inexpensive speakers I could get for my setup that still gives out deep bass and great sound. My main gigs are small clubs/bars and weddings. I was looking at the Technical Pro or Behringer brands which seem to be in my price range which is around $500 maybe $600 Can someone please help me with this??

Your budget seems a little more realistic than a lot of cats looking in to buying a sound system. For 5-600 bucks, you can do something ok.

(I'm assuming you have a decent power amp. If you don't, please re-ask this question, and I think I can still help you.)

I have never used the brands you mention, although neither has the greatest reputation. I play much the same gigs as you do, so I am very sure about what you will want.

Personally, I have been using this VocoPro 12" powered (built-in amplifier) subwoofer made for Karaoke to get me major floor-shaking bass at bars and the like. It was only 200-something bucks, and I recommend something like it as the core of your system. You will rock that way. Here is the link to where I bought mine. If that is the centerpiece of your system, you really don't need much of a woofer on your mains. And since you only need a little woofer, the boxes will be smaller. And since the boxes and woofers are smaller, they will cost a lot less. Personally, I use big 15" Yamahas as mains because I bought them before the subwoofer, thinking they could handle the bass for me. Unfortunately, they couldn't, so I bought the VocoPro 12" sub, and it fixed me up.

For your mains, I'd go for an 8 or 10 inch. Or maybe even a Karaoke main. they sound pretty darn good.

Here are some suggestions for mains to use with the VocoPro 12" subwoofer:

12" Peavey's, will serve great, plus Peavey 12's will look respectable on stands. $370 pair at http://www.sixstardj.com/pepr12en.html

10" Peavey's, will sound just as good as 12s when used with sub, but a little smaller. $300 pair at http://www.sixstardj.com/pepr10en.html

(Please do not buy Peaveys without the subwoofer. Cheap Peavey woofers are weak. Peavey Black Widows are great, but expensive.)

One little warning: Watch out for things that "sound like" good deals, and don't jump at speakers just because they "look good". A lot of 15" systems will look better that mine, but I'm recommending gear that I know will do the job for you. In anything you buy, it should play down to 30hz or lower, but the real test is that it should sound good in the rooms you play. The systems I recommended will be versatile to rock many rooms the sizes you speak of.

Finally, one suggestion that people will laugh at is Radio Shack 15" PA speakers. They cost like $150 a pair, and I had seriously good luck with old school Realistics back in '91! They have surprisingly good bass response, too. If the sub + mains idea doesn't work for you, this may.

Apple Ibook G4 Latpop Review

Getting an Apple laptop was unthinkable for me at first. I felt nothing from Apple's clever "Switch" ads, and as with many fellow PC/Windows users, I thoughts Macs were for newbies, graphics designers, grannies, and others who couldn't handle more than one mouse button.

 

However, when I began my quest to purchase an affordable portable, I ran into many problems. The ultraportables and subnotebooks often lacked basic features I wanted such as an optical-drive, and would easily burn a hole in my wallet... several times over. Thin-and-Lights looked very appealing, so I researched that category the most. Some of my favorites include the Fujitsu S6210 battery,IBM T40 series battery, and inspiron 600m battery . Yet, even the ones I liked didn't work out because they didn't fit my budget (about $1,000).

Then I was introduced to a strange mix of the above. Apple's 12" iBook weighs in at touch under five pounds, but is in the ultraportable form factor. It's too heavy to be an ultraportable, but it's small screen means it doesn't fit with most thin-and-lights. What really caught my attention was the price tag. Other than Averatec, this is the only notebook I came across with a retail price of $999 that came in under 5 pounds. But like any consumer ready to shell out hard-earned money, I was still skeptical.

I continued to do my research and consistently heard good things about the iBook. Finally, Apple and Amazon gave me a sign. In late October, Apple (apple laptop battery)included Airport Extreme (802.11g) and bumped up the base processor to 1.2Ghz. Additionally, Amazon still had a $150 rebate for Apple laptops. It didn't take long for me to figure out that $850 + $20 shipping was a darn good deal. I placed my order on the following and paitiently waited.

First Impressions

There's not a doubt Apple spends more money on design than its competitors. Just the box itself screams 'gorgeous'. I tore through the packaging like an child on Christmas morning. Underneath all the booklets, manuals, and CDs, I finally got to the iBook. I recommend keeping the thin foam as a screen protector.

Once I turned on the notebook, I was immediately filled with dread. In the upper right corner was a stuck blue pixel. I decided to not think about it, and continue exploring my new toy. (note: all images are of the replacement I received)

The laptop is absolutely gorgeous. Had I not seen the price tag, I would've thought the iBook to be much pricier. The bare simplicity of the notebook is stunning. Other than the obligatory Apple logo on top (which lights up!), there's nothing but rounded edges. No bevels; No latches; No doors. When I hold it in my hands, it feels like holding a polished piece of marble. (in reality: polycarbonate plastic, and magnesium alloy)

The construction is really top grade. Pressing against the back of the reinforced LCD doesn't cause any ripples in the image, nor does flexing the screen between my hands. I'd feel safe putting this notebook in a cramped backpack. The hinge connecting the screen also looks quite beefy and doubles as an exhaust for heat. The slot loading drive is just too cool to describe. Everyone gets mesmerized by how the iBook sucks in CDs. Apple also claims to have rubber-mounted the hard drive to absorb vibrations and impacts. I consider myself to be a PC poweruser and often have multiple applications and windows open on my desktop. I'm very used to working on one document, and then switching over with alt-tab in a Windows environment. Luckily, in this latest version of OS X shipped with the iBooks, Command-tab does the same. What's more is how hotkey friendly OS X is. While command-tabbing, I can tap other keys to have an action done on the highlighted application. I can cmd-tab to an application I no longer want, and tap Q to quit it or H to hide it. There are also hotkeys to open the Applications folder, and my Documents folder.

Display

The display is very crisp, and more than bright enough for use indoors and outdoors. The lowest setting turns off backlighting completely. The display didn't have the same wow-factor as the Fujisu S6210, but it's definitely bright and clear. Thanks to the separate ATI video chip, DVDs run without any artifacts, and color representation is sharp. There's also an optional S-Video and Composite adapter available for $20. Unfortunately, there is only screen-mirroring. In order to achieve screen-spanning, there is an a well known hack one can use. Since I don't see myself using this feature, I'd rather not risk it.
