Traveling Rack Cases

A durable rack case that keeps all your gear organized and stage ready is a must for the travelling crew that needs to setup quick and breakdown even quicker. How does one keep all the cables, patches and other numerous accessories needed to let the show go on without going mad.  Successful roadies will all tell you that keeping everything organized is the biggest factor in keeping things moving.

The first step is to recognize that you are disorganized and need to take some steps to fix the mess.  The next step is to figure out exactly how to get organized but this can be accomplished with a few tricks to eliminate the overwhelming spaghetti setup.  Take inventory of all the equipment you must carry to any gig to make it a success.  This will give you an idea of how many cases you need and how big they should be to fit your rack mount gear.

Once you have a list of items start grouping items that are the same depth you know what will fit in a rack case.  Next you will want to place the heaviest equipment near the bottom of the rack and stack lighter equipment on top. Place items like monitors and keyboards at the appropriate height for ease of use.  Then you will usually attach a cable patch bay to the back of the rack and wire each piece of hardware to the patch bay.  Now it is easy to use patch cables to easily wire everything together.

Now that you have everything grouped you will have a good idea if you need one rack case or five.  The next step is to make sure you have cables to hook everything up once in a case without switching cables around during the middle of a show.  Always make sure the cables have some slack since each venue is a bit different you need to have some wiggle room.  Also ensure that the cables used are high quality since a short, noise interference or lack of signal will kill a great show faster than a fish out of water.  Finally keep in mind how rough the ride might be for your equipment.  You may need a rack case that absorbs the shock from travelling; also known as a shockmount rack.

Once you have determined how many cases, how large and necessary accessories you are ready to purchase the perfect rack cases.  Finding the cases locally may prove much more difficult since every industry has its own standards and music stores usually carry a limited selection.  Thanks to the internet you can find all the rack cases you need no matter what your needs or industry.

CB Mic Wiring to Phono Plug?

i've got an old shure 100 series cb mic that i want to use for recording and am having trouble.

there are four wires, 2 of them are for the PT and not necessary for use, so i've got 2 wires, 1 hot and 1 ground i assume.

i've wired it up to a phono plug, but it doesn't work unless i actually touch the mic element. it's like it's using me as a ground. i'm testing out of the case, which is metal.

not sure what's happening, but, herer's a pdf. that shows the circuit diagram at the bottom.

You didn't say if you were recording into a computer, or into audio gear.

According to the pdf, that mike has a carbon granule microphone element, which is commonly used in old telephones and older radio equipment. See:

Now, computers use electret condenser mikes, and pro audio uses condenser or other more advanced mike designs, which will put out very low levels of sound, typically in the few-millivolt range or less. They require a pre-amp for most applications - a computer sound card has the preamp built in. However, the carbon mike requires an external voltage to power it, a little like an electret, and its output voltage is a significant percentage of the input voltage (so, if you put 5 volts through the carbon mike, your output signal will be about 5 volts max). This means that the CB mike you are using needs an external power source, and its signal will be way higher than your average microphone.

His solution involves adding a single battery (1.5 volts), adding a few resistors to bring that voltage down, and feeding the resulting signal to the line-in jacks rather than the mike jack (since the signal will be about 1 volt or so from the mike, and that's closer to line levels than mike levels. I think if you added his solution to your mike, it should work.

As for why it works when you hold it... I think your body may have been supplying a few millivolts to the mike, and this was enough to let the mike generate an output of a few millivolts, which is fine for a mike-input jack, but probably less than what you need to get sound from that mike. Maybe you can experiment with the mike-power that comes from the PC sound card, or tap a USB cord to get 5 volts, apply that voltage to the mike, and use resistors to bring it down to line levels. If you have access to phantom power, you can try the same thing. The pdf mentions the current specs that the CB mike takes, so use that as a guide to powering up the mike.

Plumbing Diy, Replacing Taps

Plumbing is an aspect of home improvement that often comes about without choice. It is important to take care of the plumbing of your property in order to avoid emergency situations and to ensure that you are getting the best from your plumbing system.

When it comes to replacing taps it can often be more complex than you may realise at first. Replacing taps can either be required as part of the installation of a new bath/basin or because your old taps have worn down. You may, however, just wish to replace your taps simply on a more cosmetic basis.

It is important to understand how many ‘holes’ your sink has when it comes to changing your taps. The amount of holes will determine whether you can install two separate taps or whether you will have just the one serving both your hot and cold needs. If there is one hole you are restricted to the one tap and you will require a mono-bloc mixer when it comes to replacing your taps. With one hole you will have two diameter pipes coming out of the hole, one for hot and one for cold. It there are, however, two holes you are able to fit two separate taps to your sink, giving you a tap for hot water and a tap for cold water.

Ok now you have some basics about what to look for in your pipe work we can move onto the removal of your old taps. The first thing you need to ensure you do is to disconnect the water supply and then turn your taps on fully to drain any water left in your system. The way in which you cut off your water supply depends on what sort of water supply you are dealing with. If connected to the mains you should turn off your indoor stop valve. If your hot and cold taps feed off pipes from a cistern you should have a gate valve/mini stopcock available to turn off. The stop valve can be found alongside the cold water tank.

You should then use a wrench (crowsfoot spanner) or a tap tool to undo the nut, which connects the supply pipes to the taps. You will probably experience some water coming from the pipes at this point so ensure that you have a cloth ready then loosen the nut that is holding the taps in place and remove them from the sink. You then need to clean the area the taps fit into as well as replace any old sealing compound.

Before you go ahead and fit your new taps you need to compare the pipe connections on the old taps to the new taps. If they are longer then you will need a shank adapter in order to make them fit.

When it comes to actually fitting your new taps you have to check to see if the tails of the new taps are plastic. If not a connector is required to prevent damage. One end of the connector fits onto the tail and the other provides a connection to existing pipes. To fit the taps you should position the tap in the mounting hole in the basin, ensuring that the washers are in place between the tap and the sink and when the tap is securely in place the supply pipes can be connected.

When your taps are firmly in place and have been securely connected to the pipes you can then turn your water supply back on. Once your water is on you should check for any leaks; if any appear they can normally be resolved by tightening your joins.
